Silahtarağa was the first power station, built in Istanbul in the late nineteenth century. The Plant was commissioned in 1914 and ceased operations in 1983. While taking pictures there, I found some negatives of photographs in one of the houses that belonged to a resident family. “Resistance”, whose title was born from the endurance of energy in a physical environment, transformed by the presence and movement of people and of objects, has been a way of reconciliation through found visual material, such as family albums in abandoned homes and at the plant juxtaposed against the recent pictures I authored. As an idea, as experience and as in its existence, the series has become a milieu to re-define presence and absence, abandonment and occupation through the simultaneous recontextualization of the past and the present.
